1. Prepare the Roof Structure
Make sure the roof frame (rafters, trusses) is strong and properly installed.
Install roof decking (plywood or similar boards) over the structure.
Ensure there's the correct roof pitch (steepness) — tile roofs need a good slope for water drainage.
2. Install Underlayment
Roll out a waterproof membrane (felt paper or synthetic underlayment) across the roof.
Start from the bottom (eaves) and work your way upward, overlapping each layer.
Staple or nail the underlayment securely.
3. Install Battens (Optional)
For many tile types (especially clay or concrete), you install battens — horizontal strips of wood or metal.
Battens are nailed over the underlayment and spaced based on the size of your tiles.
They provide a secure base to hook or attach the tiles.
4. Lay Starter Tiles
Start at the bottom edge (eave).
Install starter tiles or special first-course tiles, depending on your system.
5. Lay Main Roof Tiles
Work upward in rows ("courses"), overlapping each tile as you go.
Attach each tile: sometimes they're nailed, sometimes clipped, sometimes just hooked onto the battens (depends on tile type and climate).
Use a chalk line to keep rows straight.
6. Cut Tiles Where Needed
At edges, valleys, and ridges, you’ll need to cut tiles to fit.
Use a wet saw with a masonry blade or specialized tile cutters.
7. Install Ridge Tiles
After the main field is done, install ridge tiles (the ones that cap the peak of the roof).
These are often set in mortar or clipped mechanically depending on your system.
8. Finish
Seal any flashing areas (like around chimneys or vents).
Inspect for loose tiles, gaps, or anything unaligned.
Clean up the roof.
